Homenetmen London hosted a successful ‘marzagan or’ on April 14th 2013 at the Durston House School playing fields in Ealing. The aim of the event was to promote Homenetmen London’s sporting sector and to encourage greater participation from the wider community. There were over 100 people competing in the various tournaments and events throughout the day.

The event broke away from the clichés of traditional sports days; the tedium of the sack and egg and spoon races were replaced with football and basketball tournaments as well as competitions in table tennis, backgammon, chess, and sprinting.

The football and basketball tournaments, as the two primary outdoor activities, were fortunate to be under some long overdue sunshine and were fiercely contested throughout the day. Team Narbeh Assadoorian, led by the efforts of player of the tournament, Arameh Mehrabi, were crowned champions of the football competition, while Heros Jojaghaian, Varag Atanosian, and Sevan Artin overcame the dynamic trio of Hagop Krikorian, and Vahe and Ari Boghosian to be the best of the basketball teams. Ani Fanoussi, Maria Khorozyan, and Sevana Babaian earned a hard fought victory over Venetia Abrahamian, Noemi Stepan-Sarkissian, and Anna Zainali to win the girls basketball. Hovannes Khorozyan showed his composure from the line to win the free throw tournament. The basketball competitions could not have taken place without professional referee and P.E. teacher Shakeh Meljoumian.

In the individual awards, Heros went on to claim the best defender award in the football, despite impressive performances by the imperious Kaashif. The best midfielder award went to the tireless Rafo of Team Aram, with Narbeh Assadoorian in a close second, and, in an even run for the top scorer accolade, Garo Katom clinched the golden boot award.

The indoor activities saw, on the one hand, an expected victory as Hratch Boghosian continued his dominance in table tennis, while, on the other hand, Anna Avekian was something of a surprise package in the backgammon as she outplayed considerably more experienced players to win. Souren Alexanian – another youngster – won the chess tournament.

This day was not solely for the athletes however, as many spectators enjoyed the not-so-English weather and the food that was prepared and served by more volunteers who helped making this a successful event. A particular highlight of the day was the raffle, which offered prizes ranging from the 2013 Champions League Final football, donated by VKS Sports Shop in Ealing, to £250 worth of Adidas gift vouchers, kindly given by Shaké Kalemkaryan through her employers at Adidas.

2013 marks a special year for the sporting chapter of Homenetmen London as the men’s basketball team readies itself for the games in Yerevan this summer. The team travel as Homenetmen London’s sole representatives and it is with events like that of April 14th that could ensure 2017 is just as special.
