The 23rd of August 2013 marked the beginning of the 29th Annual Homenetmen London Summer Camp. Scouts between the ages of 4 and 18 spent a week away from their normal lives, and were instead sleeping in tents and enjoying the outdoors.
Gilwell Park provided the perfect environment for this. The scouts were completely surrounded by nature, and fully immersed in the Homenetmen atmosphere; the outstanding organisation of the camp’s music station,Radio Panagoum, meant that Armenian music was constantly being played; the marvellous running of the campfires every evening enthused all those present and encouraged them to take part in various sketches and songs presented throughout; the very fact that the scouts were constantly surrounded by other Armenians for the whole of the seven days played a vital role in creating the perfect ambience in which our culture was triumphantly encompassed.
A wide range of activities that were organised included regular visits to the swimming pool, as well as practical lessons in the forest and a series of educational sessions. This year, these sessions were themed around Armenian Victories, giving the young Armenians a more detailed insight into their past and teaching them more about their heritage. Topics such as Operation Nemesis, Armenian Dynasties and the First Independence of Armenia were covered. Additionally, in an extremely well prepared practical lesson the scouts had a chance to create physical replicas of Armenian landmarks. These structures were added to 3D maps of historical and modern-day Armenia, and these were exhibited at the camp Open Day, along with small pieces of writing produced by the scouts that provided some background on these significant places.
The Open Day was the perfect opportunity for the parents of the scouts, as well as other members of the wider community, to visit the campsite and see what the youths had been up to during the week. With the weather on our side, and a hoard of willing parents preparing and running the barbecue, the Open Day was a raging success. Following a speech given by Edmond Abrahamian, Chairman of the Homenetmen Executive Committee, Heros Jojaghaian, as leader of the camp itself, gave an empowering speech which epitomised the aims of the organisation whilst also reminding the guests of the hard work that went into the preparation of the camp:
Սիրելի ներկաներ, եւ քոյրեր ու եղբայրներ,
Բարի եկաք մէր բանակավայրը։ Շաբաթ մըն է որ այս բանակավայրը կը կոչենք մեր տունը։ Այս սահմաններէն ներս կառուցած ենք մի փոքր Հայրենիք։
Հ.Մ.Ը.Մ-ական Հայ սկաուտը անհամբեր կ’ըսպասէ այս առիթին որովհետեւ կ’ըստէղծէ այդ մթնոլորտը որուն մէջ կրնայ ոչ միայն իր սկաուտական գիտելիքները գորձադրել, այլ նաեւ զարգացնել իր կեանքի կարգապահ ընթացքը։
Ինչ որ կը տեսնէք ձեր շուրջը պատահական չէ, այլ, իրականացած է շնորհիւ այն միասնական եւ անխոնջ ջանքերու բերումով որ առաջ տարած են գաղափարակից մեր անդամները որոնք մաս կը կազմէն այս մեր սիրելի միութեան։ Մեր հաւաքական ուժն է որ Երեւան կը հանէ այսպիսի հպարտալի արդիւնք։
Նախ, թոյլ տուէք մեր խորհին շնորհակալութիւնները հայտնելու բոլոր անոնց որոնք որեվէ ձեւով օժանդակեցին եւ կը շարունակեն օժանդակել այս բանակումին։ Նաեւ կը շնորհաւորենք բոլոր անոնց, ըլլան պատասխանատու կամ այլ, իրենց ներդրած ջանքերուն համար որուն որպէս արդիւնք այսօր հոս ենք այս բանակավայրին մէջ։
Այս տանը մէջ մեր գլխաւոր նպատակը եղած է վերապատրաստել հոգուվ ու մարմնով երիտասարդներ խանդաւառելու անոնց եւ ստեղծելու իրենց մէջ սէրը եւ յարգանքը հանդէպ սկաուտական վսեմ գաղափարներուն, շարունակելու համար իրենց սկաուտական կեանքը Հ.Մ.Ը.Մ-ի շարքերէն ներս։ Այսպէս, մեր սկաուտները, այս մէկ շաբաթուայ ըթացքին կը վայելէն Հայկական այս գեղեցիկ մթնոլորտը, որը հազուագիւտ է սփիւռքի համար։
Այս տարի մեր բանակումը կազմակերպուեցաւ «Հայկական յաղթանակներ» կոչումին տակ։ Այս ծիրէն ներս տեղի ունեցան բազմաթիւ դաստիարակչական ժամեր որոնք զբաղուեցան մեր դարաւոր պատմութեան զանազան յաղթանակներու ծանօթացումով անոնց, նպատակ ունենալով ոգեշնչելու մեր սկաուտները ու ազգային հպարտութեամբ ներշնչելու անոնց։
Եթէ Հայաստանը մեծագոյն ծեւով ներկայ ըլլայ մեր սրտերուն ու հոգիներուն մէջ, ուրեմն Հայաստանը միշտ ներկայ կ’ըլլայ մեր մտքերուն, խօսքին ու աշխատանքներուն մէջ։
Առ ի եզրափակում հաւատացած ենք, որ վերոյիշեալ աշխատանքը իր կարեւորագոյն նպաստը կը բերէ հասնելու Հ.Մ.Ը.Մ-ի բուն նպատակին՝ – պատրաստել իմացական եւ հոգեկան բարձր արժանիքի տէր, ազգասէր եւ հայրենասէր երիտասարդներ։ Հաւատացած ենք նաեւ որ ապագայ մեր սերունդները պէտք չէ բաւարարուին միայն հայապահպանումով՝ այլ անսասան եւ անդեդեւօրէն զարկ տան մեր ազգի ու հայրենիքի յառաջդիմութեան ու զարգացման։

All in all, the camp was thoroughly enjoyed by all who were present. Unsurprisingly, the scouts left the campsite completely and utterly shattered, but with a rich bank of memories which they will have to treasure forever. As the above speech noted, credit and thanks must be given to all those who helped, in any way whatsoever, in making the camp everything that it was. Being at the end of the Summer break – as opposed to the norm of being at the beginning – this camp has given Homenetmen London’s forthcoming scouting year a great platform from which to launch.
